Double Espresso
In "Double Espresso", Musica Poetica treats you to Bach's coffee cantata (Schweigt stille, plaudert nicht, BWV 211) and its French counterpart Le Caffé by Nicolas Bernier in one programme-a double espresso, that is. Both works originated during the time of the great boom of coffee houses opening all over Europe. At least Bach's cantata was therefore performed in the Kaffehaus Zimmermann where Bach regularly organised performances. Since Bach's piece about Liesgen, the coffee-addicted daughter of Mr Schlendrian of Leipzig, is among the love pieces of today's audiences, we offer coffee lovers an entirely new flavour direction with Bernier's typically French Caffé.
The performance is complemented by dances (such as the specially composed Chaconne for Coffee Addicts) and entertaining anecdotes from the time of Europe's first coffee houses. (In England, for example, a movement of women against serving coffee arose in the second half of the 17th century, but more on that in the performance).

Paradise Lost
In 1658, the blind John Milton began dictating to his daughters and friends a poem that would become a reference for poets and writers for the next two centuries. Paradise Lost recounts the epic deeds of the fallen angel Lucifer, whose pride and envy cause the fall of man and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. The poem was the basis for several compositions, such as Haydn's Schöpfung.
In this programme, recited excerpts alternate with settings of Milton's poem by composers such as Johann Ernst Galliard, John Christopher Smith and others, commemorating the 350th anniversary of John Milton's death.

A musical afternoon with the Bach family
It is well known that the great Bach family met regularly to make music in larger and smaller family circles.
This morning, we will give you an insight into what a musical afternoon at the Bachs' house might have looked or sounded like. The focus will be on the second orchestral suite in B minor for flute, strings and continuo (BWV 1067). It is not certain exactly when it was composed. Bach is said to have performed it around 1740 at the Zimmermann coffee house in Leipzig, among other places, but the work will be older.
Contemporary research suspects an earlier version in a minor. There are good reasons to believe that the first version was written only for strings; the solo Bourrée II was probably not in it then, and the remarkably few other solo passages were probably entrusted to the first violin.
The suite is ideally suited to a chamber music performance and contains some contrapuntal subtleties. The final movement of the overture, for instance, is an implied multiple canon of all voices. In several movements, there are canons between the upper voice and the bass; in the Sarabande, there is even a strict fifths canon.
You will also hear the Sonata in G for violin and continuo (BWV 1021), excerpts from the Sonata in g minor for violin without bass (BWV 1001) and the first Cello Suite (BWV 1007), and a Sonata for violoncello and harpsichord by Bach's son Johann Christoph Friedrich, who spent most of his career at the court in Bückeburg.

Experience a heartfelt piece of Commedia del'Arte full of slapstick in which the relationship problems of a drunken bass player and his wife are brought to heel. The two let sparks fly, only to end up united in each other's arms.
The music is by Joseph Haydn's brother Michael, who played with Mozart and his father in the Salzburg court orchestra.
Incidentally, Leopold Mozart complained about his often drunken fellow musicians. So it may well be that Michael Haydn's work also contains autobiographical references.

Using 7 historical and modern flutes, Katja Pitelina illuminates the history of the flute in this concert presentation.
Katja shows how the instruments sound, what the sound possibilities are, their specific sound characters and how composers through the centuries have adapted their repertoire for flute accordingly. In this concert/lecture, Katja gives a general overview and highlights the origins of the flute, its various manifestations, from the mid-fifteenth century: the repertoire, and the stylistic characteristics of the different periods: the Renaissance, the Baroque, the Classical period, the Romantic, the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.
Maria Nemtsova, Vitaly Vatulya and Katya Pitelina are the ambassadors of Music for Peace. There will be performances by students of the Davidsbündler Music Academy. A musical afternoon with the Bach family
it is well known that the large Bach family of musicians met regularly to make music in both larger and smaller family circles. This Sunday morning, Musica Poetica gives an insight into what a musical afternoon with the Bachs might have looked, or rather sounded like. Besides sonatas for violin and harpsichord by Bach's father, some of the finest works by his sons Carl Philipp Emanuel, Johann Christoph Friedrich and Johann Christian for flute, cello and clavichord are also presented. As well as some arias Bach wrote for his beloved wife Anna Magdalena.

The composition is a real comedia dell árte! It consists of no less than 24 parts based on folklore dances, songs and rhythms. The Boerencantata swings, is expressive and precisely tailored to the text.
'Orchestra Suite No. 2' consists of a number of dances that were performed at court in the 17th century: Rondeau, Sarabande, Minuet, Polonaise. The work ends with a very virtuoso badinerie! Katja Pitelina can show what she is worth in this composition.
