French king Louis XIV staged his absolute power not only in magnificent architecture but also in dance: in 1653, dressed as the sun god Apollo, he embodied the rising sun at the centre of the planetary system. He continued to perform regularly as a dancer until 1670.
The most important composer at court was Jean-Baptiste Lully, who created the style of French music entirely characterised by dance.
